B.A., M.Div., M.A. (MHC)

Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC)

Dave Ponting has been counselling people in crisis for almost twenty years. Dave is a graduate of the University of Guelph where he earned an undergraduate degree in History and Psychology, the University of Toronto where he completed his Masters of Divinity degree, and Medaille College School of Graduate Education in Buffalo, NY where he earned an M.A. in Mental Health Counselling. He has a passion for walking with people as a companion on the journey to healing and renewal.

Dave loves life, is down-to-earth, easy-going and enjoys finding the humour in life. He has experienced the ups and downs of life's roller coaster and picked himself up off the floor, navigating through tough times.

Dave ‘gets’ real life and the stresses that can come with daily living. After spending twelve years in the business world in management positions with large multi-national marketing companies and a multi-national advertising agency, Dave left business and, following Masters studies, became an ordained Anglican priest. Along the way he has been a chaplain at a women’s correctional facility and nurtured a special gift for walking with people through grief, loss, with couples in crisis, and individuals experiencing the pain and dislocation of divorce and separation.

Dave has also worked as a Mental Health counsellor in the offices of two Hamilton family physicians where he worked with the full spectrum of primary care mental health and relationship issues.  He is a registered health professional as a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association and the International Centre for Clinical Excellence.

Extremely client-centered in his philosophy, Dave practices an integrative approach to psychotherapy. He believes that each one of us has unique life challenges and depending on your goals for therapy, no one size fits all. Dave’s believes that change is more lasting when we are active participants in our own healing. His personal worldview is that we are all much more resilient and resourceful than we realize.  To learn more about Dave's theoretical approach to counselling, go to the FAQ page on this site.

Dave is committed to life-long learning and best practices for renewing and keeping fresh his own professional knowledge base and skill-set.  He regularly seeks out continuing education opportunities to keep on top of developments in psychological research and clinical practice.
